SHIFTED
ShiftED is a new charity founded by two passionate teachers with a mission to provide design education to students in the state system. The organisation sought guidance on positioning, fundraising, and developing a business plan to showcase their impact and vision.
Our collaboration began with a funding workshop involving ShiftED's CEO and a Trustee. The workshop aimed to assess their fundraising capacity and identify key assets. Following the workshop, we crafted a tailored strategy with a focus on attracting corporate funding. This included creating engaging collateral with a strong call to action and highlighting their unique place-based activity.
We provided guidance on data capture, stewardship, and effective fundraising techniques to boost their confidence. We also helped them start the conversation with two major brands to kickstart their fundraising journey.
ShiftED is now well-positioned to achieve its mission of delivering high-quality design education to students in the state system in a sustainable way.
KFC/HATCH
As one of the largest youth employers in the country, KFC see incredible potential across their teams. Many of their team members join KFC at the start of their working lives – they have been the ‘first job’ of thousands of young people – and that is a responsibility they take incredibly seriously. As such, they created a social mobility programme to ensure that they were helping young people be work ready through a training and work experience programme ran within their restaurants.
Hatch was coming to a pivotal moment where the UK & Ireland business wanted to look at a model that would fund their Hatch programme from within. I was brought in to help them look at new models of financing, working with the internal teams. This involved a workshop to explore the viability of various routes and then researching the potential outcomes to see whether they were achievable.
I then helped prepare the recommended case ready for the global Investment Committee.
CARERS WORLDWIDE
Carers Worldwide commissioned Roxburgh Consultancy to conduct a feasibility study on whether Carers Worldwide can help businesses who have a large workforce initially in India, to identify the carers population within that business, and support them, so they remain within the workforce.
Carers Worldwide have been in existence for 10 years and works exclusively and strategically with unpaid family carers in the Global South. They act as a catalyst to achieve long term and sustainable change by promoting recognition of carers, drawing attention to their needs and promoting achievable solutions.
We conducted primary and secondary research, designing a survey that was distributed to the HR teams of major global brand that we sourced, then analysed the data and insights to provide a report with our recommendations.
TREKSTOCK
Trekstock, a cancer charity that supports young adults in their 20s and 30s with age appropriate support, was at a point of scale. Like most small charities, Trekstock had faced many challenges with fundraising and staffing during covid.
The organisation was undergoing further structural and financial change in the next phase of its life as it moved into a scaling ambition and Rachel was brought on board as a business consultant to support the CEO and Board help define the strategic necessities essential for achieving the organisation's ambitious three-year plan.
She designed a three year fundraising strategy and looked, and recruited, the resource needed to deliver it. As part of this, she also reactivated key partnerships to make them more long term and strategic. Additionally, Rachel worked closely with the team inside the organisation to make sure that the programs were designed well, matched the main goals, and could meet the expected performance measurements. In this complex role, Rachel played a crucial role in making Trekstock stronger as it expanded its operations and aimed to achieve its big long-term goals.
Rachel is working with the CEO on a business development offer to corporates focused on the power of young people's voices.
'Future Voice of': allows young people to influence and inform industry/sector decisions that affect their lives. The charity will source and create Youth Advisory Boards to guide businesses in understanding young people’s expectations as consumers and what they feel are the key concerns for that industry to survive.
‘Meet your Future’: a combination of industry-sector reports and insight, based on Votes for Schools data analysis, and direct opportunities to meet, speak to and reach young people.
VOTESFORSCHOOLS
Initially brought in by the Founder to create a new funding model, Rachel took this youth employability charity from a single funder to a multi-income model.
She strengthened their monitoring and evaluation process, introducing new frameworks for measuring impact. This was then used to improve how they attract businesses, build the volunteer base, develop an impact strategy, and strengthen the student employability skills programme in schools and colleges. She rebranded the charity to be modern and relevant to its student audience and to create a three-year strategy driving home social mobility within businesses.
Rachel acted as interim CEO to navigate them through the pandemic.
WORKING OPTIONS IN EDUCATION
Rachel was commissioned by the Sir John Beckwith Charitable Trust to identify how to address issues around elderly loneliness and to improve multi-generational mental and physical wellbeing.
The Trust’s initial aim was to create a new charity. Through the research process, she recommended instead to create a partnership between two existing charities, The Youth Sport Trust and Intergenerational Music Making (IMM) to co-create and deliver a new national pilot: Move and Groove. This innovative project combines music and sport to deliver improved health and wellbeing for both very young and much older people. As part of this she set up an Advisory Board of experts in this field, which I co-chaired with Sir John.
This exciting new partnership delivered 10 Intergenerational Move and Groove projects, all rooted in empowering groups and individuals, promoting new intergenerational connections, and showcasing the relationship between music and movement.
The Move & Groove pilot was evaluated by London Southbank University using an innovative technique to assess the impact on wellbeing of both elderly and young participants, through‘spit-and-measure’ tests to measure levels of cortisol. Cortisol, widely known as the stress hormone, is nature’s built-in alarm system, which works to control mood, motivation, and fear.
The trial was successful and the project now has its own home with IMM who are rolling it out in partnership with Youth Sport Trust.
MOVE & GROOVE
Rachel was commissioned by Wayne Hemingway to curate a film featuring sport icons such as Tanni Grey-Thompson, Tony Bellew, Jamie Carragher and Lawrence Dallaglio, and panel discussion for the The Good Business Festival, the world’s first creative-led purposeful business event, a collaboration between HemingwayDesign and Culture Liverpool. For the film, she worked the flow and narrative, and secured the talent.
She brought in Gabby Logan as host for the live event, who also led my Raising the Game panel session, which focused on how sport can become more sustainable. Rachel co-ordinated down-the-line contributions from all over the world for the session.
The panel:
Yath Gangurathan, Director of Strategy & Development, F1
Michelle Moore, ex-athlete and international speaker
Dale Vince, owner of Forest Green Rovers
Ali Giordiano, Senior Vice President, Global Sponsorships, Mastercard
THE GOOD BUSINESS FESTIVAL.
MALTESE MICHELIN FEAST
We were commissioned by the Happy Initiative to advise on a high end dinner called Maltese Michelin Feast. Happy Initiative is a voluntary team located across Europe, who support people and animals in need, often triggered by natural disasters and/or political conflicts, regardless of origin, gender, age, political or religious beliefs.
They wanted to bring Michelin star chefs over from Malta to hold a fundraising dinner in London. The Corinthia Hotel was secured and we helped them design and produce the event, liaise with the suppliers, design the collateral including a short film, and secure volunteers and an auctioneer. The evening raised £60,000 for Help Ukrainian People.
PARKPLAY
Based on my extensive experience in scaling small operations, I was brought in to provide guidance to a young and ambitious charity on their funding model and strategy for growth.
During their strategy session, I provided an external perspective, challenged their thinking, and helped design a roadmap for their next three years. With a keen eye for both internal and external implications, I ensured that every aspect of their plan was thoroughly considered.
Additionally, I advised on crafting a compelling corporate offer that would attract businesses to invest in their important community work.
